FORGE RUNE AND AEKUL by Forge Rune

The cold wind gusted around the jagged stone like a rushing river of snow and ice. Howling, the wind rushed down the mountain side. Sunlight reflected of the white snow patches creating a blinding glare. This high on the mountain the air was cold and thin. Very few things made thier home on the cold rocky slopes near the mountain peak. However, a lone figure stoically climbed upwards.

Forge Runehammer, dwarven paladin, carefully made his way past the tree line into the biting river of wind, ice, and snow. Shading his eyes from the glare of the sun, he scanned the higher slopes. He noticed, for the briefest instant, a white flash move high above. Forge felt re-assured that he had not lost his quarry and with grim determination resumed his climb.

Several hours later, Forge arrived at a large cleft in the mountain side. It was near here that he had last seen the giant mountain ram which he had been tracking for the last three days. The cleft was narrow at the opening; but, seemed to widden and slope downward. The sides were steep and looked treacherous. A hoof print in the snow near the entrance indicated that the giant ram had entered the small mountain valley. Forge followed cautiously.

It was here that Forge got his first close look at the giant mounatin ram. The shaggy white ram stood easily 5' at the shoulder and was broad chested and muscular. Golden horns curled back atop it's head. The ram turned and regarded Forge with intelligent brown eyes. Suddenly, the ram pawed nervously at the rocky ground and snorts of steam issued forth from it's nostrils. The ram gave a frantic BAHHH which was drowned out by a loud bellow from behind Forge. The dwarven paladin dove forward just as a huge battleaxe cut into the air where he had stood moments before.

" Gordul!", Forge cursed as he rolled to his feet and turned to face his attacker. A large frost giant laughed mockingly as he regarded the stout dwarf before him.

" LOOKS LIKE I AM TO HAVE A BIT OF SPORT BEFORE DINNER," the frost giant bellowed looking from the dwarf to the giant ram and back again.

"Moradin!!!", Forge screamed as he dashed towards the frost giant dodging left at the last moment as the giants huge battleaxe glanced of the dwarven made shield. Forge continued forward between the giants legs while angling his hammer towards the giant's knee. The hammer connected with a satisfying crunch. Bellowing in pain the frost giant caught him with a back-handed blow which hurtled Forge accross the small stone valley. The frost giant staggered towards the fallen dwarf; his battleaxe raised for a killing blow. The giant screamed in painful surprise as the giant mountain ram crashed into his already shattered knee. Battleaxe lashed out as the frost giant fell right and slice into the giant ram.

Forge quickly regained his feet and charges towards the unaware frost giant rolling on the ground. The frost giant had only seconds of realization before Forge's warhammer thuded into his skull. Forge gave the frost giant no time to recover as he raised the warhammer again and again.

Steam rose from the wounded giant mountain ram as he tried to rise from the snowie ground. Blood poured from the open wound on the creature's mighty chest turning the snow crimson. Throwing down his shield and hammer, Forge rushed towards the dying ram.

"Moradin, hear yer faithful servant!," the dwarven paladin's voice echoed off the stone walls, " breathe life apon dis mighty ram so 'e may live an serve ye!"

Forge felt the warmth of Moradin's breath flow through him into the ram. The flow of blood stopped and the wound began to magically close. Minutes later the giant ram stood apon quivering legs. The creature regarded the dwarven paladin proudly then butted him playfully.

"A' guessin we goin ta be partners, eh?" Forge smiled at the giant ram, "Wellin am tinkin ye be needin a name. Aekul! It means Gold-Horn in tha tongue a' me kin. By Moradin's beard a' tink it fits ye!"

Two days later, Forge Runehammer, dwarven paladin of Moradin, rode down the mountain. He was mounted on his new companion, a giant war-ram, named Aekul.
